About the Owner

Casey Anderson was in some ways destined to work in the beauty industry – a flare for the artistic, an eye for fashion, and to top it off, a mother who has been a stylist for decades.  But Casey’s pursuit of a career in the industry took a great deal of effort, faith, and even a bit of rebelliousness. You see, after spending years working in salons, her mom wasn’t overly enthusiastic about Casey’s desire to follow her into the industry.  The hours are long, the licenses are expensive, the clientele can be demanding.

Nevertheless, Casey’s passion for the business was undeniable. So it was no surprise when she got certified in permanent cosmetics, licensed in esthetics, and enrolled in cosmetology school and then began accumulating advanced training and certifications.  From there the search for the right employer began, and she started at a salon in Fargo.

After being there for a while, Casey began to discover that working for someone else meant she might be unable to put all of her certifications and skills to good use. She began looking around at other local salons and discovered that each of them would in some way limit her ability to do everything she wanted to do with her career. That discovery led her to take the proverbial leap of faith and create for herself the business that would allow her to offer all the services she wanted to provide.

Driven by her passion for the beauty industry and a self-admitted stubborn streak, Casey found her way over the hurdles that confront any entrepreneur and managed to get everything in place for what would become Urban Edge.

About the Company

The original location for Casey’s salon was slated for Harwood, North Dakota, on the outskirts of Fargo.  That location, on the edge of Fargo, was the inspiration for the “Edge” portion of the salon’s name.  The “Urban” portion comes from the rustic, contemporary style Casey envisioned for the interior of the salon. Although the salon is now in Fargo itself, the name Urban Edge has stuck, and it still fits.

What sets Urban Edge apart from most other local salons is the variety of services offered.  Clients can come in for haircuts, skin care, permanent makeup, a makeover, or a massage.  The diversity of offerings makes things convenient for clients, who can come to one location for their beauty needs. Casey always strives for perfection and loves creating new looks for customers, so you will be in good hands.

The staff aspect of Urban Edge is especially unique.  Casey makes space available to local massage therapists and stylists who can come in, use the space, and build their own clientele, all while incurring very little in the way of start-up costs.  It’s a great way for local service providers to experience the flexibility and freedom of owning their own business without taking on all of the risk.

About the Alerus Relationship

Casey was (and is) young for a new business owner.  Her age became a hindrance as she was starting out, because many banks looked more at her age than her business plan.  In fact, “Alerus is the only bank that took the time to read my business plan,” Casey notes.  Relationship Banker Andrew Hanson has played a big role for Casey, helping to guide her through and show her what to expect when starting a company.
One of Casey’s favorite parts about banking with Alerus is the new online banking system that launched in October.  She says it makes banking easy and convenient, and it’s really helpful to be able to see all of the important information right up front.  The online banking system and everyone’s friendliness and eagerness to help out are some of the reasons why Casey has already recommended Alerus to others who are thinking about striking out on their own.
